Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American rapper singer. In film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has won the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nominations, and nods to an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and was educated in Newark New Jersey. She went to in the Baptist church. In her early twenties, her cousin gave her the stage name Latifah, which means gentle and loving in Arabic. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a forward on her basketball team in high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the song. He signed Latifah and then released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
